Week 9

In this week's blog, we learned about the connection between space and art. Prior to reading the material for this week’s blog, my understanding of how art and space correlated with each other was lackluster.  When reading the material, I was fascinated by how the Cultural Center of European Space Technologies (KSEVT) and how “The program includes additional cultural (exhibitions, events) and scientific activities (research, conferences) strongly connected to the phenomena of ‘culturalisation of the space” (KSEVT). Furthermore, the architecture that is displayed highlights the usage and the interconnection that space has within art, and how we express our understanding of it. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Herman_Poto%C4%8Dnik_Noordung_Center_of_Space_Technologies I found another article that touches on the topic of how space art has the ability to tell a story through how a character is expressed within the spatial background that they are in. “Space emphasizes a narrative, highlig...

Event 2: 24-hour Unplug Challenge

https://www.amyvetter.com/blog/unplugging-recharge-amz36 “Disconnecting from technology can help you reconnect with yourself and the people around you, leading to more genuine interactions and experiences.” (Weeraman) For this week's event, I attempted the “24-Hour Unplug Challenge.” Going into this challenge, I thought it was going to be more difficult than it was. Being a college student, I feel like I am around a screen or some piece of technology 24/7. This feeling makes the idea of technology feel like a necessity in my life more than a luxury. The idea was that without technology and, more importantly, any media outlet to help supply me with sports news, it felt like a daunting task.  https://retailtechinnovationhub.com/home/2024/5/20/reading-apps-how-technology-is-transforming-the-way-we-consume-books I began the day by waking up a couple of hours earlier than I do, to my surprise, since I usually rely on an alarm clock to wake up. My morning already felt more “efficient” si...

Week 7 Blog

In this week's blog, we will explore the crossroads between neuroscience and art. Prior to this week, I was not sure of how intertwined the art community was with neuroscience, but upon reviewing the resources and doing extra research, I realized that there is a very profound connection. Art is more than just physical beauty or physical expression, but it is also used to actively shape our brains and describe our biological experience in real life. “The nascent field of neuroarts rests at the crossroads of science, the arts, and technology.”(NeuroArts Blueprint). When examining Professor Victoria Vesna’s Octopus Brainstorming, the quote “ By generating affective and cognitive engagement, it elicits an enhanced consciousness of relations that surpass species boundaries.”(Albu) This quote delves into the idea of how, through art, we can find the interconnectedness of all life forms.                               ...

Week 6 Blog

https://www.ekac.org/gfpbunny.html   For this week's topic, I learned about the contentious dialogue connecting biotechnology, ethics, and the role of art in science and society. The question of “is life itself an expressive medium?” has been answered through the work of Eduardo Kac’s GFP Bunny. In the article, we learned about how a rabbit could glow a fluorescent green by receiving the green fluorescent protein gene. At first, the artwork of the GFP Bunny was held in heavy controversy, but as years passed, the popuular opinion on it has changed. “In the two decades that separate 2000 from 2020, my artwork GFP Bunny has gone from an epicenter of controversy to an icon of pop culture” (Kac). Furthermore, the change in opinion of the GFP Bunny reflects how important and impactful the study of biotechnology is to society.  https://www.smithsonianmag.com/science-nature/organs-made-to-order-863675/ Craig Venter, in a TED Talk, discussed the creation of synthetic life, and it was a...
